Rachelle Bruce x Favotell London

December 27, 2016

We’re back again with our Q&A segment. Today is about the fashion brand 1985.1985 is the unique brand child Rachelle Bruce who created a collection of bespoke bags that you can insert your photos into. We’re talking to Rachelle to find out more about the person behind the brand !

What did you want to be when you were a child?

This is so funny because I remember wanting to be a singer but I asked my Mum and she said I wanted to be either a Nurse or a Air Hostess! Here's the thing...I can't sing very well, I can't deal with blood and all the stuf that goes with being a nurse and I really really really don't like flying. So all the things I wanted to be when I was a child was never really going to happen for me, I just didn't know that at the time. Actually thinking about it, I do have this one memory of me sitting at my play kitchen shufing some papers and saying that I wanted to work in an ofce. That must have been written in the stars because I worked in an ofce for what felt like an eternity!

Did you study art/design/fashion in school and how did you learn the skills you have today?

I didn't actually study fashion or anything remotely creative after I left secondary school. I remember really enjoying art and music in school but when it came to deciding what to study in college I became all boring and serious and chose Business Studies with a side of Information Technology. Then I went to university and started a Marketing degree but never quite finished, I was far too busy enjoying the student life to actually study anything so that never quite worked out! So I learned the skills I have today just by teaching myself really. I used to customise clothes when I was a teenager and I also used to sketch fashion designs. I actually had some cool ideas for clutch bags years ago but never did anything with it because I was so busy working in an ofce. I taught myself how to use a sewing machine from watching YouTube videos and now I'm mad at myself for not learning how to use one sooner than I did.

Who are your favourite fashion influencers at the moment and how did they influence your work?

I have always adored Vivienne Westwood, she does whatever she wants and it just works. Whenever I see any of her work it just makes me smile and I just love how risqué some of her designs are. I think
she influences me because I treat her work like confirmation that it's ok to be diferent and to have fun with fashion.
I also love Olivier Rousteing, what he is doing at Balmain gives me life! The detail, the patterns, the elegance, the colours...everything going on at Balmain is just beautiful to me. I think he influences my work because I really take my time thinking about the finishing touches and how the detai
