Hey guys we’re back with our weekly Q&A segment. This week we were talking to Hodaya Louis, professional artists and fashion illustrator. Hodaya is the recipient of the title and grant “Distinguished Artist of Israel.” and the winner of Next Generation Design Award from the Luxottica group, guest judge and speaker at the Fashion Institute of Technology. We wanted to know more about her inspirations and the journey of her career. Enjoy x
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got into fashion and art?
Since I dressed my barbies in little dresses I made with taped fabric, I was attracted to textile, to fashion, to drapery, colours and textures, and to trying to capture them with art. My Father, artist David Louis, made sure to give me and my siblings art lessons since a very young age, understanding perspective, light and shadow and the human figure. Capturing images I liked on paper is something I did since I remember myself.
How did you develop your art and fashion illustration skills?
Since I wanted to be a fashion designer as a kid, I went to fashion school, Fashion Institute Of Technology, NY. While learning, part of the curriculum was fine art classes, such as nude drawing and sculpture. So as I was working on my fashion career (which eventually I realised is not for me as it requires a strong business aspect) I continued developing my artistic skills. Once I found myself without a job in the fashion world, something I'm grateful for today, I picked up the pencil again (that was 4 years ago) and I find myself drawing or painting almost every day since then.
